This webinar is part of our ongoing Politics of Transition in Syria series, which brings together Syrian and international scholars to explore the complex challenges shaping Syria’s post-conflict trajectory.
This particular session will focus on rebel governance and post-conflict trajectories of state-building, placing the Syrian experience in a comparative perspective. We are interested in exploring the institutional legacies of rebel governance and how these inform the possibilities and challenges for political stability and legitimacy in the post-insurgency context. Under what conditions are rebel groups that assume state power able to achieve widespread legitimacy and advance an inclusive state-building process?
Through the discussion, we hope to explore how the institutional legacies and modes of organization of rebel groups are transposed – or indeed transformed – in the post-conflict context, and their implication for either institutional consolidation or fragmentation. We are also interested in assessing how both political ideologies and the shifting position of post-insurgent victors on the international scene shape the goals and priorities and inform governance style. Finally, we seek to assess comparatively and in the Syrian context how institutional arrangements can account for multiple sovereignties and rivalries in a manner that contributes to political stability and extended legitimacy.
